The rise and fall of the coloured front door
Funnily enough, the front door is often the first thing people see when the visit your home. It’s a great way to add personality and individuality to your home. So what does your front door say about you?
Remember not so long ago, every second house had a brightly coloured front door. It was a trend many saw as tacky and lacking taste, but those who loved it LOVED it. A friend of mine actually changed the colour of her front door with every season!
The rise
Once upon a time, front doors were limited to neutral shades and timber. We’d visit each other’s houses and lament the fact that front doors were just that, doors. Mere entry ways. A boring portal into the home.
With a growing desire for individuality and curb appeal, homeowners began embracing the coloured front door trend. Vibrant reds, serene blues, and pastel pinks (which coincidentally is the colour they used to paint prison interiors as it was believed to calm the prisoners, so say what you will about the people who chose that colour for their door). This trend brought an exciting change to traditional exteriors that allowed homeowners to express their creativity and make a lasting first impression. We love a coloured front door when selling, When buyers are scrolling through endless properties online, a coloured front door will draw their attention as a point of difference.
A tough choice
But what colour do you choose for your front door? Certain colours have played a part in defining the coloured door trend. Traditionally, the classic red door exudes warmth and energy symbolising hospitality and welcoming guests into the home. Blues ranging from calming pastels to bright royals, beachy turquoises and bold navies evoke a sense of tranquillity and serenity. Sunny yellows radiate joy and cheerfulness. Vibrant greens are a connection to nature and freshness. And we already know about pastel pink…
Each colour choice brings its own unique character and aesthetic to a home’s exterior. Whether or not you’re a fan of the coloured door trend, you can’t deny, it makes an impact.
The fall
As design trends have evolved, the coloured door trend has suffered a shift back to more understated options. Many homeowners now gravitate toward neutral and mutes tones, such as soft greys, earthy beiges and warm taupes. This move suggests a desire for timeless elegance and flexibility. If you’re a neutral door person, that doesn’t mean you lack creativity or personality! It just means your expressing it in a different way. You’re front door and entry way can still be a great way to add a little something different to the exterior of your home by other means such as landscaping, lighting, unique hardware choices, the list is endless!
